Races 2019 and Cyril Kelly on Sunday Miscellany

Throw me Down Something

The heyday of this little money spinner for Listowel Traveller children seems to have passed.

The numbers in The Feale were well down. They seem to have taken to busking instead. I also missed the puppet man from the Small Square.

Ladies Day 2019

I hardly ever remember such a beautiful Ladies Day, weather wise. The ladies looked resplendent. The judges had a tough job.

A great design partnership of Aoife Hannon,  milliner, and Betty McGrath, model, won the prize for jazziest hat. Betty must have been in the running for the overall prize as well. She looked stunning .

An old post box on Denny Street, Tralee. Volumes of mail have decreased enormously. How long before An Post takes away the kerbside postboxes too?

Sounds like a Brilliant Idea

Have you heard of hotdesking?

Here is the Wiki definition:     Hot desking (sometimes called "non-reservation-based hoteling") is an office organization system which involves multiple workers using a single physical work station or surface during different time periods.[1] The "desk" in the name refers to an office desk being shared by multiple office workers on different shifts as opposed to each staff member having their own personal desk.

Now HQ Listowel is taking hotdesking to the next level. When this office space opens in Market Street shortly, it will mean that someone who needs a temporary office space in Listowel can have a hot desk or office with everything laid on. It's kind of like the concession shop idea but with offices.

Mount Brandon, Reading, Fishing, washing and a tale of a lost boy

On the Top of Mount Brandon

Faha Ridge

Our intrepid photographer is Catherine Moylan who braved the elements to climb Mount Brandon two weeks ago. I think you'll agree she got some great photographs.

Fishing from the beach in Ballybunion is popular. Bridget O'Connor took the photo.

Good drying

Do you remember when everyone had a long washing line and it always sagged in the middle? A housewife's Monday was made is there was 'good drying'.

In Search of an Evacuee

These photographs were taken in Ballybunion one day in 1945. The little boy and the little girl had just made their First Holy Communion.

He is Hurst Hess, a German boy evacuated to Ireland during WW2. He stayed with the family of the little girl's cousins. She is Eily Mai Kissane.

The first  old photographs was discovered by Bridget O'Connor as she was trawling through boxes of old photographs to give to the family historian, Eily Walsh who is compiling another photographic exhibition of the Kissanes of Kilcox, Lisselton. Eily had the photograph of her aunt, Eily Mai.

The photographs were taken in Beazley's in Ballybunion.

Eily is now busily trying to track down Hurst or his descendants. The Kissane family were very fond of him and missed him when he returned home to Germany. But they never heard of him again.

Eily would love to share this part of their family history with Hurst's German family.

German boys were also evacuated to Listowel and surrounding areas. I wonder does anyone remember any of these. Wouldn't it be nice to bring them all back to the place that was their home for over 2 years during a very troubled time own their country's history.

Vincent Carmody's Book Launch and new milliner in town

On Sunday evening Vincent launched his lovely coffee table book to a huge audience of appreciative Listowel people.
Twas far away from coffee table books or even coffee tables that many of the book's subjects were reared.
We had a great night. The speeches were entertaining and the company good. Bryan MacMahon talked of leaving Listowel in 1959. He knew the shopkeepers only as "cardboard figures in the background of (his) childhood". Vincent's book has brought these characters to life for him and for many of his generation.
I never knew most of the people featured in the book but I enjoy reading about what life was like in Listowel one hundred years ago.

I had a great time snapping away on the night. Here are a few of the people who attended the launch.

Below is a link to Jer.'s video of Vincent's speech on the night. You may have to wait for it to settle down.

Antoinette O'Mahoney, the milliner sister of Betty McGrath is now selling her hats in Betty's shop in Courthouse Road.

Here are a few examples of her very reasonably priced chapeaux. The model is Betty, herself.
